Building a Scene From the Ground Up

WEDNESDAY JUNE 11th 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. EST

A thoroughly imagined world requires more than situating your characters in time and place. A rich scene evokes tone, meaning, and depth, and can make the difference between a so-so read and a great one.

We'll ask the questions: Why are scenes important? What differentiates a scene from exposition? If a scene is a container for conflict, tension, and character, how full can we make that container? Memoirs, novels, short stories, and even essays are composed of building blocks -- scenes, exposition, transition, summary -- and it can be a challenge to figure out what's needed and when. What makes a great scene work alone and as part of a larger story? We'll look at great scene examples, the main ingredients of a great scene, and the art of layering these elements during drafting and revision.

You'll leave with an exercise and prompts to guide your own scene-building.
