The Artist's Way for the Midlife Woman
A 12-week workshop from the HerStories Project
September 2nd-November 21st
Join us for three months of creative inspiration, connection, and getting back in touch with your voice, your intuition, and your joy.
This workshop is based on Julia Cameron's iconic 12-week book and program, The Artist's Way, but with a twist. We'll interpret each week's lessons and tasks through the lens of midlife and feminism.
While The Artist’s Way offers timeless tools for creative recovery, this workshop goes a step further—we’ll name the real barriers midlife women face: the emotional labor, the caregiving load, the silence we’ve internalized. This is not just about morning pages; it’s about rewriting the narrative that says our creativity must come last.

Using the Artist's Way book as our guide, this workshop includes weekly lessons, prompts, and optional weekly Zoom meetings in a private online forum just for midlife women.
If you've been feeling stagnant in your writing, your work, or your personal life, this workshop can help you get unstuck. With low-pressure, doable readings and exercises, writers can carve out time for their creativity and stay accountable with the support of fellow midlife women.
The Artist's Way has a long reputation for re-sparking creativity in its readers, of bringing them back to life, of reconnecting them with their art and their purpose. Morning pages, Artist's Dates, and noticing synchronicities are a hallmark of Julia Cameron's book, and we'll incorporate those into our weekly meetings and discussions.
This workshop is for writers of ALL levels. It is also for women with any belief system or spiritual practice—or lack thereof!
The Artist's Way has sometimes been criticized for, similar to a 12-step program, focusing too much on "connection to a higher power" or God. In our workshop, we will prioritize honoring any and all belief systems. You do NOT need to be a religious or spiritual person to experience this course fully. Our emphasis will be on the intuition and creativity of each midlife woman as we adapt Cameron's program, tailoring to women who have carried too much for too long. This is a space where caregiving, midlife reinvention, and the quiet grief of lost creative time are acknowledged—and where your creative fire can be safely reignited.
This workshop will include:
- Weekly lessons and exercises based on each chapter of The Artist's Way.
- A weekly Zoom meetup* for discussion, sharing updates on our practice, and reflection.
- Readings and discussion questions.
- A private community forum just for members of this workshop.
- Feedback on your writing from the instructor and other participants.
*Zoom meetups are optional and will take place on Wednesdays at noon EST.
""It is never too late or too egotistical or too selfish to do something for yourself."
— Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way
Throughout our decade of facilitating writing workshops, we have learned something universal about writing our personal stories:
Sometimes it’s not enough to write them. We long to be read.
There is an alchemy to having our words be received by others, but when are sharing details of our personal lives, it can feel vulnerable. Our writing workshops offer a middle ground: The opportunity to create, but also be read by the other women in the group in a safe, supportive environment.
Whether you are experiencing The Artist's Way for the first time or have repeated it multiple times throughout your life, this is a unique experience to reframe this practice through the lens of midlife womanhood.
Just as our stories and writing practices shift and evolve, ebb and flow, throughout our life cycle, so too does our perspective on our own purpose and creativity.
Let this workshop be an opportunity for you to tap into your writing NOW, as this vibrant, current version of yourself. Explore new or familiar concepts and prompts in a different place—midlife—surrounded by other women who understand the unique gifts and challenges of this stage of life.

"This group has encouraged me to take my writing seriously again...
..to look into my past and celebrate the good times while letting go of some of the negative stuff; it’s been a joyful, non-judgmental space to write and read and share."
